Strengthening and structural repair underway on Lisbon Viaduct
22 April 2025
Repair work is taking place on the Duarte Pacheco Viaduct, one of the main access roads to the city of Lisbon, Portugal.

Measuring 355m in length, it is composed of five main parts: two 40m lateral arches, one over the railway line and the other over Avenue of the Monsanto Forest Park, two 85m viaducts and a 92m central arch over Avenue of Ceuta.
The work focused on three areas: seismic strengthening, structural repair, improvement and enhancement of the viaduct鈥檚 safety conditions.
Ulma has been working on the project to create safe working platforms and accesses. These solutions helped made the works possible without affecting the normal flow of rail, road and pedestrian traffic on this busy road.
The company designed two protection gantries on the tracks, with shoring towers, BRIO beams, profiles and ENKOFORM formwork.

BRIO scaffolding solutions, both cantilevered and suspended on the deck and arches, created safe working platforms in all areas of the viaduct, including decks, arches, piers and abutments.
According to Ulma, this strategy optimised the amount of scaffolding required and reduced potential restrictions to the access and surroundings of the jobsite.
The scaffolding for the piers and abutments was supported directly on the ground and adapted to the different geometries and specific requirements of the project. This ensured that workers had access to all parts of the jobsite.
