First foundation for Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm installed
02 May 2025
Belgium-based Jan De Nul has begun constructing the foundations for RWE’s Thor offshore wind farm, situated approximately 22 kilometres offshore near the west coast of Jutland in Denmark.

The heavy-lift vessel Les Alizés has successfully installed the first of 72 monopiles for what is being referred to as Denmark’s largest wind farm to date.
With a total capacity exceeding 1 GW, RWE’s Thor wind farm will contribute to Denmark’s energy transition goals. More than a million Danish households will receive renewable energy generated in the North Sea.
Günther Fenle, Project Director for Thor at RWE, said, “Our Thor offshore wind farm - currently under construction - will be Denmark’s largest to date. The successful installation of the first monopile marks a significant milestone, achieved through the collaborative efforts of everyone involved. My thanks go to all colleagues and suppliers for their contribution so far.
Besides the monopile foundation and scour protection installation, the company will also install the inter-array cable system and the export cables connecting the offshore and onshore substations.
