Swizterland-based global construction firm Implenia has been awarded a contract worth more than 鈧200 million (US$229 million) to build a complex underground tunnel section of the Nordmainische S-Bahn in Frankfurt, Germany, for the country鈥檚 national railway operator Deutsche Bahn.

The new rail tunnel segment will extend from Konstablerwache in central Frankfurt to the Fechenheim district, passing through the planned underground station Frankfurt Ost.

The scope includes installation of two 1.2km tunnel bores, auxiliary construction pits, water management systems, and special foundation works due to the dense urban environment.

The tunnels form part of the broader Nordmainische S-Bahn expansion, a major infrastructure investment aimed at easing congestion in the Rhine-Main region.

The overall project includes two new rail tracks running between Frankfurt, Maintal, and Hanau along the northern bank of the Main River. The Nordmainische S-Bahn expansion is expected to improve mobility, reduce emissions, and boost regional connectivity.

Implenia will also build the station box for Frankfurt Ost and complete the design and engineering phase by the end of 2025. Construction is set to begin in early 2026 and run through 2031.
