Chinese consortium wins $2.2bn Tanzania-Burundi railway deal

A consortium led by a subsidiary of China Railway Group (CREC) has signed a deal worth almost US$2.2 billion to build a railway that stretches 240km from Tanzania to Burundi.
China Railway Engineering Design and Consulting Group and its partners won the contract with Tanzania Railways Corporation to build the standard gauge railway, which will form part of a transport corridor connection Tanzania鈥檚 Dar es Salaam Port directly to the Musongati nickel mining area in Burundi.
The consortium is building sections 7 and 8 of the line. Section 7 covers 156km from Uvinza to Malagarasi in Tanzania, while section 8 runs 84km from Malagarasi to Musongati.
The entire standard gauge railway will eventually run 651km from Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean to Mwanza Port on Lake Victoria.
CREC said it expected to complete sections 7 and 8 of the line within 72 months.
