Transport for London trials mobile charging with electric construction vehicles
20 February 2025
Transport for London (TfL) is collaborating with the construction industry on a trial of zero-emission construction vehicles, as well as a 鈥渇irst-of-its-kind鈥 mobile recharging method in the UK.

In this initiative, TfL has partnered with FM Conway (FMC), Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE), and SMT to introduce an electric excavator and wheel loader, replacing traditionally fossil fuel-powered equipment for the first time.
The electric vehicles utilise a recharging method provided by Charge Fairy, a UK-based electric charging startup. The company offers real-time updates on the vehicles鈥 charging levels while on-site, allowing the team to deploy a charging van as needed. The approach enables construction machinery to be recharged in approximately one hour.
The ongoing works at three junctions in Redcliffe Gardens in London, UK, will take place over an 11-week period and aim to enhance pedestrian safety by creating raised road sections that slow down traffic and facilitate safer crossings. Additionally, the project will improve bus stop accessibility by extending the pavement.
The project will also reuse materials and recycle nearly all concrete waste by FMC.
Any additional waste generated will be reused in future TfL projects, ensuring minimal environmental disturbance.
Mats Bredborg, electrification leader for Volvo Construction Equipment, said, 鈥淢any Londoners may not realise that the smaller diesel construction machines they pass by every day are entirely exempt from emissions controls. This means they emit disproportionately high levels of harmful pollutants like NOx and particulate matter, contributing to poor air quality and posing serious public health risks.
鈥漈hat鈥檚 why initiatives like this are so important鈥攂ringing the industry together to deliver a fully operational, electric, zero-tailpipe-emission solution that helps create cleaner, healthier streets for London.鈥
