Vinci to build 1.8km channel to major port鈥ut first has to clear out unexploded bombs
06 February 2025

A consortium led by contractor Vinci has won a contract worth 鈧183 million (US$189.5 million) to build a 1.8km-long channel between a major port and the Seine river basin in France.
The project for Haropa Port involves the construction of La Chati猫re, a 1,800-metre-long river link between Port 2000 in Le Havre (Normandy) and the Seine river basin, protected by an embankment.
But one of the consortium鈥檚 first tasks will be to clear out unexploded ordnance left over from the Second World War. Le Havre was a target for bombardment following the Allied troops鈥 invasion of occupied France and sits around 90 miles from the site of the Normandy Landing beaches. Vinci expects to have to remove around 80 unexploded devices during the process.
Vinci Construction owns 62% of the consortium via its subsidiary Ter茅lian, the lead contractor) and DEME (38%, a Belgian company in which VINCI holds a 12.1% stake. It will also enlist the services of other Vinci subsidiaries, including Oc茅lian (for maritime works), Navarra TS and Cardem Pyro (both for soil remediation).
The channel is due to open in 2027 and Vinci said it would connect France鈥檚 largest job and consumer market with the port, while direct river access would lower carbon emissions in logistics chains.
