Russia to start construction of road bridge into North Korea
27 March 2025
Russia is set to start construction of a road bridge over the Tumen river between the two countries, according to report.
The bridge between the two countries was agreed in 2024, during a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to North Korea where the two countries signed a strategic partnership agreement.
Construction is due to start soon, Russia鈥檚 ambassador to Pyongyang was quoted as saying by state news agency RIA.
The road bridge will be built near the existing 鈥淔riendship Bridge鈥 rail bridge which was commissioned in 1959 after the Korean war.
It will be 850 metres long and link up with the Russian highway system. South Korean satellite imagery analysis firm SI Analytics said in a 5 March report that work on the bridge鈥檚 foundations and road links appeared to have begun.
Alexander Matsegora, Russia鈥檚 ambassador to North Korea, told RIA, 鈥淭he construction of the bridge has not yet begun.
鈥淭he parties are carrying out preparatory work, finalising design documentation, forming construction crews and columns of equipment,鈥 he said.
