Swiss summit reopens after cable car work completed
The Schilthorn Summit in the Bernese Alps, in Switzerland, has reopened after a winter of construction work. The Schilthornbahn 20XX project involves dismantling and rebuilding one of the steepest aerial tramways in the world. The first phases of the work by rope-propelled mobility company Garaventa to install tramway sections between Stechelberg鈥揗眉rren and M眉rren鈥揃irg were completed last year, leaving only the upper section from Birg to the Schilthorn summit closed. The revolving restaurant at the Schilthorn Summit, at an altitude of 2,970 metres, was turned into a hotel for 15-25 construction workers over the winter. The building was transformed back into a restaurant in February, ahead of the first track for two new Funifor cable cars opening between Birg and Schilthorn in March. Construction of the second track is set to start and is expected to be running by the end of November 2025.

Hong Kong鈥檚 old Kai Tak Airport takes shape
A forest of cranes at work at the vast new development at the old Kai Tak Airport site on Eastern Kowloon Peninsula, Hong Kong, China. The 320-hectare site is being transformed into a mixed-use residential, commercial and leisure district. A 50,000 seater stadium has already been completed while a residential neighbourhood will house 150,000 people in one of the densest urban areas in the world.
TBM removed after completing HS2 tunnel
Following a five-mile drive underneath London, UK, HS2 lifted tunnel boring machine (TBM) 鈥楽ushila鈥� out of the ground at the Green Park Way site in Greenford, west London. The cutterhead, front and middle shield, weighting 880 tonnes, were lifted from the vent shaft in one piece using a 750 tonne gantry crane. The TBM 鈥� with a cutterhead spanning 9.48 metres in diameter 鈥� was launched from West Ruislip in October 2022 and completed its journey in December 2024. TBM Sushila excavated over 1.2 million tonnes of earth and installed 4,217 tunnel rings. TBM Sushila was used to construct part of the Northolt Tunnel 鈥� an 8.4-mile tunnel being built by four TBMs which will take HS2 trains from Old Oak Common Station to the outskirts of the capital.

Construction of Egypt鈥檚 new capital by Chinese firms nears completion
China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) is advancinng the inspection and acceptance work for Egypt鈥檚 Central Business District (CBD) in its New Administrative Capital. The New Administrative Capital features the Iconic Tower, Africa鈥檚 tallest skyscraper at 385.5 metres. Located in the heart of the desert some 50 km east of capital Cairo, the CBD project covers an area of about 505,000 square meters. The project, being constructed by Chinese companies has been a flagship project under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Construction of Mumbai coastal road
Construction continues on a coastal road in Mumbai, India (pictured with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link cable-stayed bridge in the background). The US$1.5 billion, eight-lane road will be 29.2km long, running along Mumbai鈥檚 western coastline connecting Marine Lines in the south to Kandivali in the north. The first phase of the road, completed last year, is a 10.6 km section from Princess Street flyover to the Worli end of the Bandra鈥揥orli Sea Link.
