Helsinki tram depot contract goes to Skanska-led consortium

Sweden-based global construction company and contractor Skanska announced it received a contract from City Transport in Helsinki, Finland, to build a new tram depot for around US$265 million, nearly 3 billion Swedish Krona.

The new depot plan calls for 41,000m2 floorplan, and it will serve about 50 trams. Included in the design is space for daily tram maintenance, cleaning and repair work.

The depot will be built by a consortium with Skanska serving as main contractor. The joint venture also includes project owner Helsinki鈥檚 City Transport, two Sweden-based engineering consultants (Rejlers and Sweco), and two Finland-based companies: foundation specialists Sipti Infra and designers Arkkitehtity枚huone APRT.

鈥淭he project has high environmental ambitions,鈥� added Skanska. 鈥淭he aim for the depot building is to be certified according to BREEAM level Outstanding.鈥�

Construction will begin in the first quarter of 2025 and is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2029.
