The project, located in Teesside, UK, is set to begin construction in mid-2025, with start-up anticipated in 2028.

NZT Power will progress in tandem with the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP), which has recently announced that it has reached financial closure and entered the execution phase for the CO2 transportation and storage infrastructure. This infrastructure will support three initial carbon capture projects in Teesside, as part of the East Coast Cluster.

Construction on these two projects will be carried out by nine leading engineering, procurement, and construction contractors across eight contract packages, with a combined value of approximately 拢4 billion.

Among the nine companies are Balfour Beatty and Costain who are set to play leading roles within the project.

Balfour Beatty will utilise modular construction techniques to build the M&E equipment and plant rooms off-site.

Costain is responsible for overseeing and managing the engineering, procurement, and construction of the onshore CO2 gathering system and associated utilities for the East Coast Cluster in collaboration with NZT Power, NEP, and their partners.

NZT Power could generate and support over 3,000 construction jobs during the construction phase.

Ian Hunter, managing director at Net Zero Teesside Power, said, 鈥淭oday鈥檚 announcement is the culmination of years of work to make Net Zero Teesside Power a reality. As the project progresses into the execution phase, we look forward to delivering on our ambition to create and support thousands of jobs whilst generating flexible, dispatchable low-carbon power for the UK.鈥

Leo Quinn, CEO of Balfour Beatty Group, added, 鈥淣et Zero Teesside is a transformational project, underpinning the UK鈥檚 transition to cleaner and greener energy consumption and driving regional economic growth in Northeast England.

鈥淸The] announcement takes us one step closer to realising this ambitious scheme, which will demonstrate collaboration at its finest and see us unite our unique strengths together with Technip Energies鈥 world-leading engineering and technology integration skills, Shell鈥檚 state-of-the-art CANSOLV* CO2 Capture technology and GE Vernova鈥檚 unparalleled power generation knowledge.鈥
