More than 12,000 structures destroyed so far in Los Angeles fires
13 January 2025
At least 24 people have died and more than 12,000 structures destroyed so far as high winds continue to fuel fires in Los Angeles, US.
The fires fall into two main zones covering a total of 60 square miles: the Palisades fire and the Eaton fire. Authorities estimated that 7,081 structures have been damaged or destroyed by the Eaton fire, with another more than 5,000 damaged or destroyed by the Palisades fire.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said that the Eaton and Palisades fires are likely to be the second and fourth most destructive fires in California鈥檚 history respectively.
The Palisades fire is only 13% contained, while the Eaton fire is 27% contained and more high winds are expected in the area on Tuesday.
A preliminary estimate on the losses that the damage will cause made by private forecaster Accuweather totals US$135-$150 billion. Analysts at firms including Morningstar and JP Morgan have calculated that insured losses could total more than $8 billion.
However, with the fires still largely uncontained, the scope and scale of the losses and the subsequent reconstruction cost is still unfolding.
Meanwhile, more than 150,000 people in Los Angeles County are under evacuation orders. Another 700 people are taking refuge in local shelters, according to officials.
