HS2 selects JV for 拢332m high-voltage network delivery, maintenance

A joint venture of Germany-based transport solutions firm Siemens Mobility and UK-centred construction and engineering company Costain was awarded an approximately 拢300-million (US$377-million) long-term, design-build contract to deliver the high-voltage power supply systems for the UK鈥檚 HS2 high-speed rail project.

Costain said the JV will be responsible for designing, manufacturing, supplying, installing, testing, commissioning and maintaining high voltage power supply systems between London and Birmingham, which entails the entire 225km route.

The JV is expected to bring together a range of skills for the scheme including project management, digital coordination, systems integration, equipment manufacturing and supply chain collaboration.

鈥淭raction and non-traction substations will be built alongside the line, providing power to stations, shafts, portals, depots and railway systems between London and Birmingham,鈥 said Costin.

After the design-build portion of the contract is complete, the JV will transition into a seven-year maintenance contract with HS2. That portion of the agreement is valued separately from the design-build contract in the amount of 拢32m ($40 million).

Rob Morris, joint-CEO of Siemens Mobility UKI, noted a recent investment commitment by his firm in the region will aid the company鈥檚 involvement in the contract.

鈥淲e鈥檙e already committed to investing 拢100 million in a brand-new digital engineering, manufacturing and research and development centre in Chippenham, which will now play a key role in delivering HS2,鈥 said Morris.
