Demolition works begin at University of North Carolina

United States contractor 4 Seasons Demolition has begun works to demolish a major structure at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW).
The contractor has deployed multiple machines for the mechanical demolition of Galloway Hall, a six-storey student accommodation block that was built in 1971.
UNCW said: 鈥淕alloway hall has held as many as 400 residents but is no longer utilized and is beyond its serviceable life.
鈥淭his Demolition Plan applies to all physical abatement, demolition, and waste generating activities performed as a part of the remediation and demolition activities of the project.鈥�
The project has a budget of roughly US$2 million and according to UNCW, 鈥渢he project will include an environmental assessment, removal of any hazardous materials, the demolition, removal and disposal of the building and associated utilities, foundations, slabs, as well as the demolition, removal, and disposal of site improvements鈥�.
Originally called 鈥淒orm 71鈥� and comprising a total area of 64,912 sq ft, Galloway Hall is of a steel frame, masonry veneer construction.
鈥淚t was the first residence hall built on the UNCW campus and was the first air-conditioned residence hall in the University of North Carolina system,鈥� said UNCW.
