Samsung C&T signs deal to develop Estonia鈥檚 first small modular nuclear reactor

South Korea鈥檚 Samsung Construction & Trading Corporation (C&T) has signed a deal with an Estonian energy company to develop a small modular reactor (SMR) that could become operational as early as 2035.
Samsung C&T鈥檚 engineering and construction (E&C) group has signed a teaming agreement with Fermi Energia in Seoul, South Korea.
Samsung C&T E&C Group will participate in the concept design (pre-FEED) and the front-end engineering design (FEED) stages. It will oversee tasks such as site evaluation, cost estimation, and project planning.
The planned plant will use the BWRX-300 SMR model, developed by GE Hitachi.
鈥淲e aim to strengthen our global position as an SMR player through the successful execution of Estonia鈥檚 first SMR project,鈥� said Jeong-eun Kim, senior vice president of the Nuclear Business Team.
Samsung C&T E&C Group is already involved in the in the FEED stage of a 462 MW SMR project in Romania, in partnership with NuScale Power and Romania鈥檚 Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica (SNN). The project aims to repurpose a decommissioned coal-fired power plant, with commercial operation targeted for 2030.
In 2024, it also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with K盲rnfull Next AB to jointly develop Sweden鈥檚 first SMR power plant, targeted for completion by 2032.
